With SWING CITY SAM
Wednesdays at 8:00pm
WGBB AM 1240
"Its Not Your Daddy's Swing"

Swing City is a "new-swing"  radio program  on WGBB AM 1240 on Long Island, New York. We play only the new swing.  As Sam, the host, likes to say “this is not your daddy’s swing!”

WGBB's 1000 watt signal reaches all of Nassau County, half of Suffolk, Most of Queens and Brooklyn. Our listening area comprises about 4 million people. (Let’s not forget that back in the ‘60’s, one of the most successful stations of all time was New York’s WMCA 570 AM with only 5000 watts)

The music we play is very hot! Groups such as Big Bad Voo Doo Daddy play to sell out crowds at clubs such as Long Island’s huge Vanderbilt, the Downtown and IMAC as well as NYC’s Supper Club during. They have had two CD's top the charts. And now every wedding band plays “Zoot Suit Riot” by the Cherry Poppin Daddy’s.  The Broadway show “SWING” successfully ran for a number of months. Midsummer Night's Swing at Lincoln Center is always jam packed during the summer months. Yet NO ONE else is playing it on the radio in the NY Metro area, save one or two college stations. People want this music, but they could not hear it on the radio, until now.

Here is one review of the show which appeared on the New York Radio Message Board:

In this day and age when we see so many complaints about rigid radio formats, you've got to now and then hand it to the little local stations...like WGHT, like Jukebox radio, even WNSW for at least going out on a limb and trying something...it doesn't always succeed, true, but at least they don't have the rigid corporate control that the big stations do.

WGBB on LI is a 75 year old icon…..  I heard, for the second time, the "Swing City Show" with a pseudo-named DJ - "Swing City Sam." I loved this show, though it was only an hour. Apparently they are looking for a permanent slot for the show, and in the meantime plugging it in where they can. The last time it aired was on a Sunday afternoon when I heard it while driving from Brooklyn to LI, and spinning the dials.

This is the only show I know of on local radio playing the best of the modern new swing music...with groups like Big bad Voodoo Daddy, the Cherry Poppin Daddies, the Camaros, Blue Plate Special and many other new swing groups. (You won't hear Sinatra, Basie,Dorsey, Fitzgerald or any of the great swing classics however--just new swing by young artists) The music is very hot and the show really cooks.

This type of music has become very hot in the clubs around NY and LI recently. In fact, Big bad Voo Doo Daddy is on tour and selling out rooms all over the country. Last week they played NYC's Supper Club, on Thanksgiving they were part of the parade and on the following day they packed LI's Vanderbilt an enormous room.

For those of you who enjoy this kind of music, you ought to tune in. This very original show deserves the support of all those who are bored with the usual fare of "Music of Your Life" "Golden Oldies" and "Jammin Oldies" and "Disco" that's offered by the major stations.

If you want something different and refreshing I recommend this show. WGBB is a small station open to experimentation. Let WGBB know if you like it so they find a permanent spot for it, they have a website, through which you can contact the station manager. www.am1240WGBB.com

The December 12th issue of NY Radio Digest put in a note about us:

"Calling All Hipsters: The popularity of "new swing", an updated revival of the swing music of the late 30`s and 40`s, has grown steadily since bands like Big Bad Voodoo Daddy, the Squirrel Nut Zippers, Cherry Poppin' Daddies, and Blue Plate Special started getting airplay a few years ago.  A new weekly radio show, "Swing City", airing every Sunday from 3-4 PM on WGBB (1240AM), features the new swing music, playing new releases and providing fans with concert and other info.  Hosting the show is the multifaceted "Swing City Sam", a well-known personality throughout Nassau County and beyond."

People are bored with what the large stations are offering..same old…. same old….same old stuff!  We play variety within our format, not the same songs week after week.

We play deep cuts, feature albums and compilations. We play "New Swing, " and we add in "Rockabilly Swing" like BR5-49, Brian Setzer, Western Swing like BigSandy, Asleep at the Wheel, and Blues Swing and Rock & Roll Swing as well.

As to the new swing, too many people I've spoken with don't even know this great music is out there. It needs and deserves airplay. I play a feature album on each show and build my shows around the feature album usually by alternating one cut from the album with two cuts from other records.

In addition I play deep cuts on my show, not just title cuts.

We are heard on Wednesday at 8:00 PM and webcast around the world. Please listen to the show, if you like, let WGBB management know.
